Salmon Leather: The Future of Exotic Luxury Accessories
Salmon leather isn’t just a material—it’s a statement. At Kristian Eddé, we believe in crafting not only exquisite design but also sustainable impact. Our salmon skins, tanned in Iceland and meticulously crafted in our Stockholm atelier, are a by-product of the fishing and aquaculture industry. What was once discarded as marine waste is transformed into thin, lightweight, yet exceptionally durable luxury goods.
But our commitment goes beyond artisanal excellence. We are proud to contribute our expertise in fish leather to MAREFINE, a national research initiative led by RISE, titled “Sustainable Use of Marine Resources for High‑Value End Products” RISE. This project explores how underutilized marine side streams—such as salmon skins—can be refined into high-value, circular materials through advanced biorefinery techniques.
“Marine side streams from the fishing and seafood industry are being valorised into high value products” RISE
By participating as an expert, we demonstrate how salmon leather can transcend its role as a material—it becomes a catalyst for circular innovation. Together with academic and industrial partners, we’re helping develop strategies and coatings (e.g., oil-based water-resistant treatments) that preserve the innate qualities of fish leather—its flexibility, breathability, and strength—while enhancing its functionality
Why It Matters
- We turn marine waste into luxury, closing loops in marine resource usage and aligning with EU and Swedish strategic sustainability goals RISE.
- Fish leather is stronger than conventional cow or pig leather due to its cross-fibre structure—ideal for durable, high-end design.
- Being selected as a RISE expert enhances our credibility and reinforces our position at the forefront of sustainable fashion innovation.
